 | Laserwriter Pro 630 - Slipping gears(?) at startup by dschwartz (8/25/08 5:42 PM) reply | + / - | I just picked up a used LW Pro 630. When I put a new cartridge in and turn on power, I get a loud thump-thump-thump, as if some gear is slipping. This does not happen with no cartridge in the machine, and I've tried it with 2 different cartridges. Could there be something broken or missing which is keeping something from turning, either in the cartridge or printer?
One time I let it go long enough to put out the startup page, but it was blank. Which leads me to believe something within the cartridge isn't rotating correctly. Possibly the gear that turns the main white plastic gear on the side of the cartridge? (Hard to tell, as I have to close the door for it to start thumping...)
Might any of the repair kits here address such a problem? They seem to be mostly for fixing the paper path, but I haven't gotten even that far yet.

If they do, look inside at the gear that drives the fuser and see if it is missing teeth. We have kits for both problems.

 | Re: Laserwriter Pro 630 - Slipping gears(?) at sta by dschwartz (8/26/08 11:23 PM) reply | + / - | Removed the fuser, but could see no broken gears anywhere inside. The fuser was hard to turn, but it was not frozen. All I really did was clean out the newly exposed insides, and manually rotate the gears I could see/reach.
But then, after I had been letting the thumping continue for a minute or so without the fuser in place (by bypassing the override switch for the back door) to try to see what was slipping, all of a sudden something popped into place, or broke free, and everything started rotating apparently freely. I replaced the fuser and now at least for the moment, all is working and I am happy.
I'll come back for more help if it seems to jam up again.
Thanks!
