How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP1800 by mickey_bigdaddy (11/20/07 9:47 PM) reply + / -
I recently purchased a Canon Pixma iP1800 and proceeded to empty out the trial ink cartridges within a short period. I re-filled the ink cartridges and got about 5-10 prints out again. But, the ink levels never reset from the original "empty" status of the original ink and now I cannot print at all since the ink levels are reporting that the cartridges are totally empty. Obviously, they are not, seems the ink level needs to be reset. How do I do this?

Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP1800 by metalhead666 (2/15/08 2:51 PM) reply + / -
YOU NEED TO DISABLE THE INK LEVEL MONITORS AFTER RE-FILLING THE CARTRIDGES. GO TO PROPERTIES, MAINTENANCE, VIEW PRINTER STATUS, OPTION AND CLICK ENABLE STATUS MONITOR ONCE.

ok. that hides the warning.
But does the printer eventually stop working when it thinks it is out of ink?

u need to hold down resume botton for 5 second then it will reset the ink level

Interesting idea kstan, but it doesn't work for me.
And how would it know which cartridge to reset?
Any more suggestions, anyone?

Thanks Pti-the-Leader.

Exactly what I needed.

You will need to download RarZilla to unzip this utility - lots of sites where you can get this free.

The iP Tool is in English.

It will reset iP1200, iP1300, iP1600, iP1700, iP1800, iP2200, iP2500.

I have just downloaded the iptool. I tried it but it just hanged. I looked at the task manager and it was not responding. Anyway, my printer is ip1800 and the orange light blinks 7x and the green 1x. guys, please help me out. thanks.

It worked fine for me - using WIN XP Pro. Did you have your printer turned on?

Pti_the_Leader
My cartridges tend to be too wet! I think, maybe, it is difficult to match the Canon ink exactly. But my suppliers advised me not to use the old ink I had left over from my i250.

mike272452

yes, my printer was turned on when I used iptool. I am also using winXp pro. Seemed like it cannot read my printer's eeprom coz' it kept on hanging everytime I ran it.

Does anyone here have any idea on what the blink code 7x orange and 1x green means?

thanks.

I know it's a bore, but it sometimes pays to look at the manufacturer's guide first......!
You will find the following in the iP1800 on-screen manual:

Seven Flashes: FINE Cartridge is not installed in the correct position.
Confirm that the FINE Cartridges are installed in the appropriate positions.

See Replacing a FINE Cartridge.

tried resetting cartridges, no luck, tried downloading ip tool, which just hangs, any ideas ?

Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP1800 by Conver (6/30/08 7:42 AM) reply + / -
Guys! I talked to a Canon personnel and he said that if the error is "Some Ink Cartridge Cannot Be Recognized" the cartridge is already damaged, specifically the chip which is installed outside. (connections to printer). He said the software is the one doing the destruction. All new IP printers from IP1300 have a software of that kind. Only IP1200 software doesn't have the capability to destroy the cartridge.

Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP1800 by baRs (7/11/08 6:47 AM) reply + / -
7 times orange blinking and 1 time green blink means your cartridge is damage and needs replacement.

about that iP1700, unplugging and plugging the powerchord, i don't think it will solve the 7 times orange and 1 time green blinking. that is used to enter the service mode.

there is no such thing as resetting ink cartridge level when refilling PG-40/PG-830 CL-41/CL-831 cartridges. but you can always disable it by pressing resume button within 5 seconds.

Sorry to have to contradict you baRs -
The iP1500 Service Tool, mentioned in previous posts, is able to reset cartridge ink levels.

I have the same problem as others in this string of messages. I followed the procedure for downloading the utility from http://www.ipt.nm.ru/

After decompressing it with Rarzilla I tried to execute the IPTool but it just hangs up in a blank page. I have Xp Pro and had the printer turned on (With the blinking lights going) while the utility was invoked.

I also tried to hold the resume button for 5 seconds -- but no change there. Also tried the other suggestion in the strings of messages i.e. unplug the chord and plug it in with the on button pressed etc. Again no effect.

Appreciate anybody have any suggestions or methods that have worked.
I guess if all else fails then I'll admit defeat and buy new cartridges.

I am told that the ink level sensor is a misnomer. In reality it is a page count. An arbitrary number decided by Canon and since the refilled cartridge has a non-zero number in it the printer hangs up thinking that there is no ink -- even though its full.

Its the most ridiculous way to want customers to buy factory cartridges. My next printer will most likley be an HP

Hello guys

I have the same problem as "n2b" and the others. 7 orange blinks and 1 green. If I try to open that russian software (iPTool) it crashes just at the begining.
I tend to believe that this program crashes because of the printer model (ip1800) or the printer driver because if i try to open it with another printer attached to the same computer (ip1700) it runs fine.

So....has anybody so far solved this problem? I really don't want to throw this new printer in the trash can :(

Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP1800 by mike272452 (7/23/08 8:00 AM) reply + / -
Sounds like you guys with the 7 orange blinks have a cartridge problem, but as this hasn't happened to me (yet) it is not easy to work out what is going wrong.

If it did happen to me, this is what I would try -
Remove the cartridges and clean the electrical contacts with a soft clean cloth and alcohol. Replace the cartridges, making sure thet are fully clicked into position in the correct slots, then try the printer to see if there is any difference.
If there was no difference, I would try to borrow some known good cartridges and see if they worked in my machine.
As a last resort, I would buy two new cartridges (because the message doesn't say which one is causing the problem). New cartridges are almost as expensive as the printer, so if I still ended up junking the printer, I would auction them as nearly-new on eBay.

If one of you guys is prepared to take a chance and try this, let everyone know, because we don't want you all rushing out buying new cartridges and making Canon even wealthier!

Good luck.

Re: Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP18 by n2b (7/23/08 10:12 AM) reply + / -
Reply to gerovinos and mike 272452
Canon's so called ink level indicator is really a paper count tracked on a chip in the cartridge and when that magic number is reached (whether your ink is finished or not)it indicates that the ink level is low/finished. Using a refilled cartridge may have a few paper counts remaining on it and will give the warning signal (7 orange blinks and a green)either right away or after a short use - like it happened to me. According to the error message I needed to reinstall the cartridge properly.
I tried the methods suggested in this forum, i.e the Russian software utility etc but to no avail. I believe this utility will work for the Pixma 1700 which seems to be able to reset the paper count but not for the Pixma 1800.
I finally gave up and bought new cartridges. It seems that Canon wants to be an ink company and doesn't care to be known for a company making technology products.
My next printer will be an HP

Hi,

Re. n2b's post, I wonder if there is a there is a point, beyond which it becomes impossible to reset the cartridges?
I have successfully refilled my cartridges several times and have been able to reset the software using the Russian software tool. Have you tried disabling the monitoring as suggested by metalhead666 right at the beginning of this thread?

Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP1800 by gerovinos (7/27/08 7:04 AM) reply + / -
@mike272452

i guess that the point after which the reset tool is useless is exactly the 7 orange blinking moment.
I've got the following 2 questions for the responders:
1) has anybody tried to reset them before the 7 blinks moment and how did the things go on afterwards?

2) how can the printer detect that the cartidges have been refilled ? does it have a mechanism that detects that the same cartidges have been removed and replaced in their slots ? would it mean that we shoud refill them without removing them ?

Thank you very much

Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP1800 by mike272452 (7/27/08 9:08 AM) reply + / -
Yes gerovinos, I am using cartridges that have been refilled three times - but I never had the 7 blinks. I refilled them when I got the warning message.
I haven't taken a cartridge apart to find out, but it seems that they contain a chip which can remember messages it has received from the printer. There is a chip resetter available for Epson cartridges and no doubt someone will come along with a Canon resetter before too long. So it might be worth hanging on to your old cartridges until that time.
If anyone has bought new cartridges, it might be worth trying a little experiment - Start the reset tool with new cartridges in the printer, then change back to the old cartridges and see if they can be reset. Might work?
Mike.

Same problem here, guys...

this is maybe 4th (I don't remember exactly) that I have reloaded my pixma ip1800 inks...

A few days ago I printed some pages both in black and color, and everything went fine and smooth...

today I connected my printer again and tried to print something, and then... same experience as yours:

- 7 orange blinks and 1 green
- doesn't help any kind of getting inks out and in again
- I can see that the connectors are OK. Nobody touched them by the hands
- this IPTool freezes if I turn-on my printer

Damn!

Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP1800 by mike272452 (7/31/08 12:00 PM) reply + / -
Hi Guys.

This is what the manual says -

Seven Flashes: FINE Cartridge is not installed in the correct position.
Confirm that the FINE Cartridges are installed in the appropriate positions.
See Replacing a FINE Cartridge.

Now, I haven't ever had this warning, so I don't have any ideas.
But as so many do seem to be geting it and you are sure you have done everything right, try this from the Canon support pages -

Issue: Alarm / Power light flashes orange 7 times consecutively (ink cartridge installed incorrectly)
Solution: Reset the printer

Resetting the Printer
By resetting the printer's power, the print buffer is cleared and certain sensors are reset. If there is invalid data in the buffer, or sensors are stuck in a particular mode; errors may occur.
Follow these steps to reset the printer:

1. Turn the printer off with the Power button (if available).

2. Disconnect the data cable from the printer (not applicable to WiFi, Bluetooth or Infrared) .

3. Unplug the printer's power cord for approximately 10 minutes, and then plug it back in. If troubleshooting a communication issue, reconnect the data cable (not applicable to WiFi, Bluetooth or Infrared).

4. Turn the printer back on.

Note: If resetting the printer does not work, please attempt any other solutions that appeared in your search results. If this is a hardware error on the printer, the printer may need to be repaired.

If that doesn't help, contact them by email and tell them you have a problem. Then post their reply here, so we can all see what they say. I just wonder if there is a problem with their software?

Re: Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP18 by n2b (7/31/08 6:31 PM) reply + / -
Mike

I am following the chain of messages from you and others after my original posting. In reply to your latest post, I tried all that you suggest. Resetting the cartridge and following the instructions from the manual that you quote, i.e. power off to reset the buffer and sensors etc. There was no change and the seven orange and one green still continued. I also did what you suggest and called Canon. I had a very long conversation with the Canon Rep and her position was what we are experiencing is due to using refilled cartridges. They don't recommend it and it violates the warranty etc etc. You know the usual party line.
She didn't say so in so many words but implied that the design of the cartridge was created to discourage the use of the refills. From that I gathered that the once the page count in the cartridge chip reaches a preset limit it will relay that message to whichever printer it is next installed into after its been refilled.

What I cannot fathom is why in some computers the reset software utility by our Russian friend works whereas in others the computer freezes.

Anyway I went ahead and bought new Canon cartridges and every thing works fine. This will also answer your last point that the printer may be having a hardware problem. Additionally, I don't believe that there is a problem with their software either as you so generously suggested. This is done by design to thwart any effort by the users to circumvent their policy of keeping a lock on cartridge sales

Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP1800 by mike272452 (8/1/08 12:25 AM) reply + / -
Thanks n2b, that is very interesting.
Could you now try a little experiment, please?
Switch on the printer with the new cartridges.
Start the reset tool. See if it runs (you should be able to read the ink levels and print a test page).
If that is ok, leave it running and re-install your old cartridges.
Now see if you can perform a reset.
You could also try only changing one cartridge at a time, because it may be that only one of them has been 'switched off'.
Let us know how you get on.

Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP1800 by kokyman (8/1/08 4:16 AM) reply + / -

I believe that the trick would be to find a program which can reset EEPROM of the printer, and not freeze while doing it.

I tried ipTool and ip1880 'General Tool', and both of them freeze.

Who knows, maybe something else works?

Re: Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP18 by n2b (8/9/08 10:31 PM) reply + / -
Thank You Dosguy
You are a genius... or something !!!!
I think you've solved the above problem. I tried the method outlined in the link with an old black cartridge which had been giving me the error message (seven amber and a green). It worked !!! No more error lights. The print was streaky but that may be because I had given up on the old cartridge and it had been laying around for a while. I think a couple of cleaning cycles will fix that problem. At least it worked without the error message.
However this method did not work for the color cartridge. The error message continued. I suspect that the color cartridge may have been damaged over time and I cannot be sure that it is still a working cartridge with a good refill.
Anyway thank you for the link. I believe this solution will work in resetting the cartridges after a refill. I will definitely try to reset the cartridges when my present new ones need to be refilled.

Thanks for the kudo n2b. I did try the procedure on a CL-31 and it did not work, but the fix indicated it only worked on PG-40 and CL-41 so maybe it does have something to do with the chip set of the standard cartridge v. the minimal "30" or "31". Cool forum. I look forward to getting my HP 6L pieces out of the box and letting you all help me get it running again.

Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP1800 by mike272452 (8/12/08 11:30 AM) reply + / -
Hi Tycats.
Peel off the label.
Enlarge the hole with a fine drill.
Inject an appropriate amount of ink.
Replace the label with a new one (they don't re-stick very well).
Place on a pad of absorbent paper towel to soak up surplus ink.
Use the software tool to reset ink level.
Good luck!

Another way Tycats can go to some of the stores that will refill for you at a fraction of the price of a new one. Try Office Max, Walgreens. You might even find a shop dedicated to printer service from the yellow pages.

Thanks Mike will give that a try - I was trying to fill it by drilling through the dimple in front of the label. It didn't work and I have very messy fingers now.

Thanks, Tycats

Gud day I already solve that blink problem,...

try this

1. press power button while plug in the powerchord - green lamp.
2. while hold the power button press resume button twice - orange
blink and return to green.
3. release the power button,

Then the pc will recognize new printer install...

Then run the iptools from russia

4. click the reset black reset color
5. click the reset main and reset platern
You will see in the iptol menu that the ink lvl will be reseted and the wp and wm will set to 0 and new cartridege installed.
then exit
restart the printer
if the problem still occured

Do the same procedures from 1 to 3 then.

click the eeprom reset botton
wait for for a second the menu will be resetted and the printer will initialized.
turn off the printer then turn on and try to print..

by the way i recognize the printer that if u park the head of printer in the replace ink area position, there will be a blinking error u will notice after a few print or after u usedu need to reset the eeprom in iptools.

smackerz78 of tipidpc.com

i hope will help

Add me to the club of 7 orange blinks. Read everything above so will give it a try. I must mention i have the CL-31 (OEM version of CL-41) that came standard with the printer. I have refilled it up to 4 times so it's impressive that Canon can kill cartridges just like that. I think it's the canon easyprinttoolbox software that does it!
I had installed and used the IP-1800 on 2 other pc by installing only the driver package. All went fine but on this PC i installed both the driver package and the easyprinttoolbox and after 4 succesful prints i got the 7 blinks. I hope to bring it back to life or else i'll end up rewarding canon for this kill by buying a new cartridge.

Hi Guys.

Has any tried the suggestion in my post - 8/1/08 12:25?
Can't do it myself, 'cos I haven't had the blinking problem.
Also, you know what they say about fixing what ain't broke!
But what is needed here is is a methodical step-by-step approach.
No good hoping for a blinding flash of inspiration.

In the good old days, some smart Russian would have spent a couple of weeks solving this. Now they are all much too rich and have joined the use-it-and-trash-it society. But I guarantee that somewhere out there is a poor genius who, at this very moment, is on the threshold of a breakthrough.

So, take my advice, hold the lighter fuel a little while longer!

Mike.

Sorry gerovinos, but it was worth a try!
Three weeks ago DosGuy posted a link to http://www.ink-refills-ink.com/InfoPages/Canon-Reset.php
I wouldn't advise actually sticking tape to the contacts - perhaps protect them with a piece of thin paper and stick the tape only to the plastic?
But these people are in the ink business, so chances are they know a thing or two about cartridges.
Has anyone else tried that? What happened?

Ok,take your inks cartridges out, used a pan cover or some thing smoothly to scratch on the brown tape (small pin hole) besure all pin hole make good contact w/ your printer, replace cartridge back to printer, turn it on, hold the orange blink untill power green light stay on. then you get set to print.Ok

Be careful! The electrical contacts are very thinly plated with gold and are easily damaged.
A while back (7/23/08) I suggested cleaning them with a soft clean cloth and alcohol - did anyone try that?

Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP1800 by Anonymous (8/31/08 10:13 AM) reply + / -
You need understand ip 1800 are difference than other, they made you un success sfter you used, they made that thinly plated with gold very sensitive.you only use your pen cover slightly touch to make Good connection.then you hold the orange blink until power green light stay on. 7 or 1 green problem are resolv.

Ok, I try every thing I could to make my own printer reset ink level work. first I have problem with 7 & 1 blinks after I refill ink, I resolved that problem, I could print but I still no level on printer monitor,2nd I download the drive ,turn off printer, take all cartridge out, cleaning, replace back, turn on & print & I can see the printer both of them show full inks level. that all I did try fix my printer working as original ink cartridges.

Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP1800 by Anonymous (9/9/08 6:25 PM) reply + / -
There are many other forums with the same problem "7 blinks clubs" :) and so far there are no solutions - resets don't work i personally tried 2 oof them and both "hang" when you use them on ip1800... the bottom point is that after the internal sensor inside the cartridge reaches its level when it sugests to change the cartridge it basically crashes (cartridge) and there is nothing you can do about it. I tried calling canon and spoke to 4 different proffecionals and one of them agreed with me that that is the way canon has manufactured these cartridges (i got pg30, and cl31) do discurage the refilling experience... Sorry people but i think we have to go shopping for new printers and for me that WILL NOT BE CANON!!!

ok folks,
Looks like we all have to be very careful to refill our cartridges when we first get the message saying that they are running low. And EVEN MORE IMPORTANT use the software reset tool to reset the levels, because it seems you can go on doing this indefinitely, unless the ink level has been allowed to drop to zero.
I am still very confident that sometime soon someone will come up with an answer to the 7 blinks candition - so don't throw out your old cartridges.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.

Have courage!

I had bought 2 Canon inks PG40 and CL41 via ebay.com, and today they came! Work perfectly, like a clock.
IpTool can easily be accessed, and I can reset now whatever I want. Got them from ebay for 10$, plus s/h.

Although Canon dissapointed me extremely with this "counter" shit, I still could't cast the printer away, because it still attracted me on multiple levels - like simplicity of use, quality of print, cheap refilling of the inks etc. So I took advice from someone who posted here, and got these better inks.

Warm recommendation to all of you who still seek solution.
Best regards!

Well congratulations kolyman!
Unfortunately we can't get those sort of prices in Europe - a set of refills costs us as much as we paid for the printer.........

"Unfortunately we can't get those sort of prices in Europe - a set of refills costs us as much as we paid for the printer........."

?! Are you sure?

Because I live in Europe - Croatia.

I bought empty inks PG40 and CL41 from ebay, America.
Then I refill them here, at the local refill store.
It costs me around $20-25 for both of them.

I suppose you were saying about new inks that they cost as much as new printer, not the refilled ones.
Otherwise, what would be the point of refilling instead of buying new ones?

Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP1800 by Anonymous (10/10/08 2:47 AM) reply + / -
plug the printer, turn it on, hold the resume button for two minutes, open the cover so the ink will move to replacing side, remove them both, after a few seconds replace them back, turn the printer off, wait a minute, then, turn the printer on again...

Re: How to reset ink level on Canon Pixma iP1800 by Anonymous (10/10/08 10:45 AM) reply + / -
The cheapest prices I have seen on eBay are from the US, where it is possible to get a set of new cartridges for around €20, including shipping. But there are now empty cartridges coming onto the market for recycling, so we may expect to see some cheaper "compatibles" soon. But they aren't ever going to be as cheap as the cartridges that don't have a built-in print head. A fiendishly cunning strategy from Canon!

Ok, I did this to my ip1700 to recover from "can not recognize the ink" message and "7 (or more)blink". Hope it will help other Pixma printers. Here are the long and short stories.

The short story first (to get you going):
- use "hold power then plug-in" to enter service mode (see above - 8/15/08 3:16 AM reply by anonymous), this will put printer from fault mode to "live" mode so won't hung the iptool.
- use iptool, it should shown the printer you have at left pan.
- check the "SET" printer type box if there are more than one model in the list. The ip1700 is paired with ip1300 (for EU region) and ip1300 is displayed in the box as default selection. Change the printer model to what you have. Hit "SET".
- The printer now is reset to the correct model.
- Test and print.

Ok, here is the long story:
I was refilling the black cartridge and want to reset the counter. I use GENTOOL to do so. However, I also did the unlock and select ip1700E from the manual. Everything works fine after I did that. The printer reports ink level are full (both black and color). Few days later we had a power outage. After power restored, the printer start to have "not recognize" message when I try to use it. When I ask the "Ink info", it report need "fine" cartridge(70/71) instead of (40/41). After search through all the above solutions I decide reset to firmware to ip1700. It does work. Looks like somehow the printer gain a different personality. My guess is the GENTOLL did that when I am trying to reset the counter. However, the change is only in the firmware not the current program. Likely the printer is running with "copy to RAM then execute". Therefore, the problem only surface after the power lost which fetches program from ROM again. This may explians some of you "did not use printer for a while then failed" problem.

During the "recovery" process I managed to get my catridge "smoke" by using the "taping contacts" methode. The catridge went back to the parking position and power went off. The printer won't come up. The power light only go green for a second then off. I try to power on serval time and end up with smoke comes out from parking area. I have to grap the cartridge by force to drag the out to open. My CL-41 now is almost not printing (lack of ink). Although the cartridge still reports good status, I may have a empty tank or bad cartridge. Somehow cover the contact may force the catridge discharge too quick. So, use the tape with care.

Is this will solve all the "7 blink club" problems? I hope so but maybe not....

The also sell good quality inks.

Hi canonheavyuser
Do you have an iP1800?
According to the compatibility information I have seen, the Sudhaus resetter works only with CL18 & PG15 cartridges, which are not suitable for the iP1800.
What cartridges have you been able to reset, please?
