Canon PIXMA MP800 Error 6A00

Canon PIXMA MP800 Error 6A00 by Yellow (6/21/06 12:12 PM) reply + / -
I've owned my Canon PIXMA MP800 multifunction printer for about 2 weeks and today it is not printing. The error on the LCD of the printer is 6A00. Anyone know what this is about? I called Canon and they suggest I drive the machine to the nearest Canon approved repair center (which is 3 hours away) and have it looked at...so I am trying to avoid this if possible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Canon PIXMA MP800 Error 6A00 by Techone (6/22/06 5:18 AM) reply + / -
6A00 is a problem with the sheet feed unit.
Follow Canon's suggestion, take it or send the unit UPS to the Authorized Repair Facility.
You will NOT be able to resolve the problem yourself.

I got this error on an Ip4000, it appeared that the print head carriage was stuck and after manually moving the carriage a few times the problem was resolved. I also blew some compressed air around hoping to clear any foriegn objects.

I have a Canon PIXMA ip5200 that was less than 6 months old and used very little.

Canon service said to either take to service center or have a refurbished unit sent. I opted for the refurb. While waiting for the refurb unit, I tried the suggestioin of simply moving the cartridge back and forth a few times. Fixed it! Why couldn't the service tech tell me this???????

Re: Canon PIXMA MP800 Error 6A00 by Anonymous (10/1/06 7:10 PM) reply + / -
Hey,

I've recently purchased a MP800. It was printing a word document, double-sided (duplex print) and suddenly on the 3rd page, a big "crunch" sound. Paper was jammed - error 5100 or smthg, and managed to remove the paper... but then error 6A00 came up. I found this post and was saved. Manually moved the print head left and right, turned the printer on/off. Still the same error. Then I noticed a piece of torn paper lodged inside. Removed that, got inky fingers, and vwallah, printer is working.

P.S. Called Australia tech support and managed to fix it myself before I even got past the 'hold' music.

anyone know much about this error and a possible fix

Re: Canon PIXMA MP830 Error 6A00 by Anonymous (12/4/06 7:00 PM) reply + / -
Had the printer a week and a half. Printed three pieces of paper and now I have an error code. The service center wants me to drive the thing 85 miles one way for somebody to look at it. Then he offers to send me a refurbished model. Mine is not even 2 weeks old and I could get a old model that someone has used for 12 months. That is not right. Who is to say that I get the refurbished model and it won't do the same thing. That's what I get for being cost effect and ordering cheaper on the internet. I can't return it to store in California from Alabama. Thanks for the hints but they did not work on my printer.

Re: Re: Canon PIXMA MP830 Error 5100 by Anonymous (12/30/06 12:26 AM) reply + / -
My MP830 was 6 weeks old when I heard a loud crunching while duplex (double-sided) printing. Error Code 5100 was on display. I eventually found paper jammed in the machine and removed it. I turned the machine on and off, and the loud crunching sound was still there. I realized something was wrong with the print head. It wasn't moving; so, I moved it myself. I turned the machine on and of again--same crunching sound. Called Canon and opted for a refurbished unit--even though, like poster wrote, mine was only a few weeks old, and I could have a refurb that is much older than mine. What if there is a problem with the refurb? I think there is something wrong with these Canon Pixma printers. I had a MP780 that was about 2 years old when it stopped powering on. Now, it powers on only sporadically. Never know when it is going to work or not. Canon's service centers--I only know of two--are not conveniently located. I won't be buying another Pixma ever again.

I have the same problem with my Pixma MP500 =/
It occurred when I was re-filling the ink manually, so the warranty is broken so the only way to get this fixed is by you guys. Canon tech will give me the finger one through ten..

Ive had problems with an MP780 but in UK under 1st year they or their contractors will do in home repair; perhaps not in US??

Eventually replaced under warranty for a new MP780;
probelms developed after 9 mths and I have just had a new MP830 delivered.

Re: Canon PIXMA MP800 Error 6A00 by Anonymous (1/18/07 5:46 PM) reply + / -
I had similar problems with the Pixma MP780. After 8 mos at first they sent me 2 different printheads. When that didn't solve the problem, they sent me a refurbished unit. Now the refurbished unit is making a loud crunching noise with error A600. These machines produce great work; the only trouble is in my experience they hardly work.

The PIXMA MP830 I own started acting up a week ago. This morning I got a 6A00 error. Fortunatly, there is a service dealer close, but I feel hosed. I am not particularly happy with the product.

We have only had our pixma mp830 for a few months and we now have the 6A00 message. We tried all of the tips offered on this website, but they didnt work for us. I guess we will have to invest in something else. I would recomend that everyone stays away from the pixmas!!!

I know this problem- The problem is inside the printer. Turn off the printer and open the replacement ink compartment- move the inks holder far to the left- use a torch to check where the inks holder home and you'll see that there is a sponge a tiny rectangular shape come loose -use the twiter and put back in place (holder). Hope this help

i have an ip4200 with error 6A00. both my lights flash and the print head does not slide (except manually). This is what happens - (the orange light flashes 11 times). The print head lowers a drop, then rises again and the printer makes a TSSSS sound - sort of like someone is letting the air out (just for 2 seconds)
does my problem sound non-home-fixable?

Re: Re: Canon PIXMA MP800 Error 6A00 by BAB (edited 3/20/07 10:38 AM) reply + / -
Your A600 is a paper path error, usually related to the purge unit. Try checking the purge unit for paper stuck in it. Don't even think of trying to replace it, very hard to do on an iP-MP800 series unit. Contact a Canon authorized center for that. You could still be under warranty and that would be covered. Contact http://www.beckscrs.com

Hi,

I've got the 6A00 error message as well on my MP830, and it looks like the print head is stuck. Is there a way of manually moving it? I don't want to force it too much if it isn't supposed to be moved manually! Thanks!

Re: Canon PIXMA MP800 Error 6A00 by BAB (edited 3/22/07 5:45 AM) reply + / -
Ok Well again I will repeat this answer with a titch more detail.
The 6A00 is a Canon generic code for paper path jam. Some where in the paper path a sensor is activated indicating paper jam so the printer will give off a 6A00 code. As a Canon tech, I usually find the code, almost 90% of the time, is related to the purge unit being jammed with something and not being able to move. Moving the print head assembly will not clear a purge unit if its jammed with paper, paper clips, push pins, screws, cookie crisp, flower bud pods or the like. And yes I have found all those things in a purge unit. The offending item needs to be removed or the purge unit needs replacement. A Pixma MP830 would still be under Canon warranty, get it into a shop and save yourself the hassel.
Incidently, the 6A00 error pertains to all Canon printers made in the last several years, its not just used in one model. And its always a paper path error or purge unit.
I forget myself so here goes, the purge unit, called a spittoon assembly in an HP, lexmark, and other inkjet printers, is where the print head assembly parks when not in use, also its other job is to clean and make sure the print head is clean and open for printing. That is why you'll find the print head assembly parked on top of it. It also has a an electrical pump to milk the print heads and test for ink flow.

I got the problem "Check Printer OK" on the LCD and the Alarm was flashing (orange). I didnt know what to do but thanks to all your advice to move the ink compartment back and forth and turned off and on the unit. It worked! and now my printer is printer again although got some inks on my fingers which is better than going to a service center!

Thanks so much for sharing!

Re: Canon PIXMA MP800 Error 6A00 by briceg (4/4/07 8:16 PM) reply + / -
I had the same problem on a brand new MP830. I brought it home, tried to do the easy setup steps, and after I installed the ink cartridges, the print head moved to the right (home) and then I received an error saying that I needed to install the ink tanks (which I just did!). After a restart, I was stuck in the 6A00 wilderness. After reading this thread, I realized that the issue had to be the purge unit. On my MP830, the purge unit is a white plastic assembly (on the right side of the printer where the print head homes) that is spring loaded on rides on a rail. I moved it back and forth (actually forward and back) about 5 times, closed everything up, and after a restart, all is well. Note the the purge unit is NOT the print head!

A HUGE thank you to BAB.

Re: Canon PIXMA MP760 Error 6A00 by BaronVonChickenPants (4/22/07 11:16 PM) reply + / -
I have an MP760 that has worked flawlessly for 18 months, I've always used genuine cartridges, Canon photo paper, standard 80gsm plain paper, and a fair few cd/dvd's all without a hitch.

Recently something fell into the rear paper feed, while priming there was an ungodly crunch and the belt for print carriage was shredded and snapped, I sourced and fitted a new belt and now I'm getting a 6A00 error.

While replacing the belt I found a broken piece of white plastic in the left hand purge area, not sure what or where it's from or what damage it may have done.

But now it doesn't attempt to move the print carriage or paper feed at all on power up, just spits out an error, and says turn the machine off an on, even if I remove the ink tanks and/or print head theres no change.

After about 3 minutes the scanner moves back and forward a little but everything else is completely unresponsive.

Is there a timing mark or something I may have messed up during re-assembly?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm getting desperate.

Cheers,
Jordan

Not a problem with the carriage assembly. Go to www.beckscrs.com. and see in parts if they list it, if not do an inquirey and I'm sure they'll get one for you!

Canon Pixma MP 780 ate paper; jam message by Anonymous (4/26/07 10:45 AM) reply + / -
I've never had any trouble with this machine till today. I tried for the 1st time to print a photo on 4x6 glossy photo paper from the cassette tray. It sounded like it was printing, then fininshed, but nothing came out. I've opened the unit and can't find the paper anywhere. The error message says paper is jamed in exit slot. The print heads do not move to the center when I open the unit as it used to. I can't even turn the machine off since it says it is still in use. Can you help?

Re: Canon PIXMA MP780 ate paper by BaronVonChickenPants (4/26/07 1:59 PM) reply + / -
In the rear of the printer there is a removable panel that gives you access to the paper feed rollers, you should find your photo paper there.

For future reference use photo paper from the rear auto sheet feeder.

Where can I buy a new printing head for a Canon MP800, and how much does it cost?
Yellow does not print anymore.
My MP800 is for familiy use, and only 6 month old. It hasn't been used very much.
Should I buy a new printing head or do you have a better idea?

PIXMA MP530 by KPM (6/15/07 5:51 AM) reply+1 + / -
I don't get a numeric code, just "paper jammed -- clear paper jam and press OK"

I have pressed OK. and Reset. and turned it off and on, with and without unplugging. and removed and replaced ink carts (which normally light up but now don't). and turned it on while holding down reset (that's old-school). and moved the ink carriage back and forth several times before turning off. and depressed the purge thing before turning off. no change.

I'm told there was a piece of paper stuck but that it came out whole, but I can't confirm that.

Help?

I have the 3 orange-blink error, and it claims there is a jam in the exit tray. I can find nothing. I have jiggled the purge unit (moves, but not much... 1/4 inch or so), and slid the ink-tank housing back and forth. All the gray sponges seem to be in place, but it (MP800) wont feed paper from the top tray. It acts like it is going to pull the paper as per usual, then pops it up a 1/2 inch or so, and doesn't catch it again. Earlier, we had problems with a few pages getting caught and bent on the way in (bottom right side), but no crunching or tearing or anything horrible.

I can't get the thing to take my paper.

Any ideas?

Re: Canon PIXMA MP780 loud by Mhammock (7/11/07 8:00 AM) reply + / -
Have had a MP780 since first available, so one of very early production models. Occasionally it has made a load (!) mechanical ratcheting like noise (7 - 10 quick clicks) and then goes into "Check printer, press ok". I can't find anything stuck or other problems but press OK and it does same thing. In the past I would turn it off for a while and when turned back on, it would work, but is a solid failure now. Since it's out of warranty, I figure any significant repair would cost more than printer is worth. Any suggestions for a 'self-fix'.
Thanks

Hi - I have had my printer for just over a year (yes now out of warrantee.) We have had some power outages in the last few days, but that has not caused problems in the past. Ironically, my PC's fan went in the last few days as well - not doing well here :-(!

I am now getting the famous 6A00 code. I have tried all the things with the print purge area etc. with no luck. There is no service center near where I live, so I am really out of luck. It would not pay me to ship it anywhere, so I am open to try anything at this point.

When I turn it on, it sounds like it is trying to move the print cartridge unit but then I get the error and nothing from there!

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I was trying the suggestions above and not only do they not work but it turns out that the printer head was not projecting the light through the ink wells anymore and the carriage doesn't do anything when I return it to home. I'm about to take it back, any other suggestions?

6A00 code is most usually, purge unit jammed.
Look for paper shard or paper clip or staple or anything that doesn't belong and will cause trhe mechanism to stop moving.

I disconnected AC cord and reconnected, nothing. I don't see any accessible reset button and am ready to open it up. Has anyone had a similar power surge issue that you were able to recover from? I received the same 6A00 error on my CANON MP530. After Reading some of the postings on the board I decided to move the printer head with my hand, slowly and tried my best to look into the printer and there appears to be a piece of paper stuck. I removed it. I powered the printer on and off again and it's up and running again. Thanks for the advice.

Photo paper should never be put in cassette, but fed in from rear sheet feeder; it's too thick to travel through.

I have a Canon MP830 with an error that says "Paper output slot, the paper is jammed, clear the paper and press OK".

The jammed paper came out in one piece, and I can find no trace of paper anywhere. I have turned the machine on and off, but always the same error. I have even tried vacuuming out around the output slot roller and inside but still no luck. I can't use the clean rollers option because I can't get around this error.

I would really rather not drive 1 1/2 hours to nearest service center. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Canon PIXMA MP800 Misfeed error by bohunk (9/12/07 8:00 AM) reply + / -
Hi,
I have had my MP800 for nearly 2 years I think. Never had any problem with it. Recently have been printing 4x6 color photos, probably around 60-70 the past couple of months, using the cassette. Never had any problem with that either (except for a tiny bit of ink sometimes tipping one corner of the photo). However, last night suddenly the printer started to malfunction. It loaded and began printing the photo (borderless 4x6 landscape) and completed about 2/3 of the print just fine when it made a brief, odd little noise, followed by a slight clicking noise, the latter which continued as it completed the print. I printed another photo and noticed that simultaneous with the odd noise, I could see the photo change path, sliding to the right, as it was passing forward through the rollers. The output shows the last 1/3 of the print about 1/8 inch out of line with the first 2/3. So it looks like a distorted smear at that point on the photo, about 1/8 inch wide, which occurred when it slid right while still printing. I cleaned the jets and the rollers and also tried using the auto sheet feeded instead of the cassette. The problematic behavior remains the same. I tried a test with 8 1/2 x11 paper and it appeared to feed just fine.
This problem simply started out of the blue, with no apparent cause. Is it likely to be some problem with the rollers or some foreign object that somehow got into the way? I'm going to examine the printer more closely tonight with a flashlight, but I'm mystified what might have happened to cause this and how I can fix it. Any suggestions?
Thanks,

I'm having the exact same problem - can't find any foreign object anywhere. At first, removing the one peice of paper that WAS jamming and hitting okay would give you another try prior to getting the jam message again - now though, that error won't clear at all.

Did you ever resolve your issue?

I have not been able to fix my printer. There is no paper jam and nothing with the ink area has workied. I can't find anyone to fix it, so right now it is useless. I am still hoping someone will post the magic answer before I go by a new printer.

I have a canon MP500 and I've been getting the 6A00 code. I looked everywhere inside and could not see any paper or anything else causing a jam. I moved the print head back and forth, removed all ink tanks and put them back in, moved the white thing back and forth a number of times, and pressed on the sponge under the white thing and nothing has worked. When I turn the printer on it makes noise, but the print head does not move at all on its own. Also, when I open the printer the white thing on the far right side is always towards the front side of the printer. I can move it back and forth and it's springy to a certain point. Then I can push it further and it stays towards the back unless I pull it forward. Could the problem be something to do with this?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Thank you!

I had to move the print heads back and forth about 50 times and turned it on and off before I got it to work. I still can't print from the top feeder, only from the bottom feeder. I figure the problem is somewhere between where the top feeder starts up to the place where it meets up with the bottom feeder assembly.

I am just going to stick with the bottom feeder.

I have a Pixma MP760 and it doesn't print. It starts up with an error message "Error. Turn the machine off and on". Nothing I do has fixed it. It worked OK and the next time I got that message. The door opens automatically at the start if that matters. I've tried unplugging the power and the USB cords to no avail. Any ideas.

Canon PIXMA MP800 Error 6A00 solution by pwolff (10/28/07 10:22 AM) reply + / -
There is a sponge to the right of the ink cart that gets pushed up to prime each ink cart. The sponge then drops back down when finished. The problem is that the sponge gets stuck up. Just give it a tap and it will fall down, turn off then on and all fixed.

I would be willing to bet that the fake ink clogs it by design. When will these idiots realize that people will find a way around everything. If they dropped the ink price by a half, I would buy it. The money they loose adds up. I have refilled my carts 6 times so far, with one refilling kit. Add it up!

Yes, I tried that fix and it worked! Simply slide the cartridges to the left and push the sponges down. Then turn off and on and away you go.

Mine (MP830) was the white plastic thingy with the rubber wiper. It was gummed up with old ink residue and wouldn't slide back to where it belonged. I took it all apart and cleaned off the residue with plain water and paper towels. Lots and lots of paper towels!!!

The error is gone, it all works fine again. Many thanks to the experts here who pointed me in the right direction!

Open the ink supply and gently move the ink cartridges to the left. Then reach in to the right side and you'll find a small (1/2 x 1 inch) sponge. Push it down and off/on the machine. It will work now.

Just an added bit of information to others that may want to use the fixes posted on this thread. May people imply that you can just open the cover and physically move the printhead carriage. Once you open the cover, the printer should move the carriage to the center to allow you to remove/replace ink carts. You should remove the power plug before you try and move the carriage anyplace. If you try and move it will the power on, you may damage the drive belt or drive motor. When the power is off, the carriage can be moved easily. Move it to the far left so you can get at the purge area better.

As other have indicated, there are many things that can cause the purge cleaning station to lock up. Most of them have to do with too much dried up ink. Many people just press the ink pads down, since they are spring loaded, and if they had been stuck this will temporaryly free them. The same goes with the white nylon wiper. It can get stuck over at the station that cleans the wiper. Again, it is almost always lots of sticky ink. Sliding in back and forth is another temporary fix.

My suggestion is to wet a paper towel with windex and wipe as much of the ink off as you can. Clean the pads, the while nylon arm, and the soft wiper as good as you can. I would also suggest that you use a syringe or an eye dropper and put several drops of Windex(or water) on each pad and let it soak down through the Purge unit. Put enough windex on each pad so they are flooded. It isn't going to hurt anything if it overflows a little. After all, this is a cleaning station and it spits out ink just about everytime you turn the power on. Fill the pads and cycle the power on and off. The purge unit will suck up the windex and flush it's tubes out. I would suggest doing this at least every six months.

While your at it, and you have the carriage in the center and the power off, do a minimal cleaning of the printhead. Take the ink carts out and cap them so they don't leak. Remove the printhead and use a paper towel wet with windex to very gently wipe all the ink of the bottom of the printhead. Check that their are no LARGE puddles of ink inside the printhead where the ink carts set. Put it all back together and you are good to go.

Some people have a difficult time getting the printhead out. First you have to unlock the printhead by raising the gray lever on the right side of the carriage. To remove the printhead, you need to use a small downward and forward pressure and then it will pull up and out. The only place to get a hold of it is inside at the very top, left and right side.

Hope this help others.

On someone else's tip, I fixed my problem. Turn the power off (unplug it)and open up the unit to expose the printer ink cartridge holders. They are not in sight but are homed in at the far right. You can manually slide the entire ink holder mechanism to the far left. Use a flashlight to view the right hand section and you should see two black sponges sitting in a plastic shell. Stick you hand in and press the sponges downward. They should move downward and if they don't, then this may not fix your printer as it did mine. Once you've done this, move the printer mechanism back to the far right, drop the lid in place and the flap in front of the inks (see instructions for replacing cartridges if unsure here). Plug it up and power on. It will take a few minutes for the unit to boot up properly. Next print a simple message from email, etc. Again, it may take a few minutes for the printer to get itself realigned but should now work

I encountered the same problem in a 6-month old machine and have been unable to fix, despite great advice in this forum. The spring finally popped off the purge unit and I'm calling it quits. It puzzles me that a machine of such obvious poor quality, which consumes ink by the gallon could get such high reviews. Oh, well, back to HP.

Model MP830

I was getting Error 6A00 and it turned out to be that the black cartridge felt cleaning sponge had been lifted out of it's well by a sticky print head and it was lodged in the front of the well. So the wiper could not seat all of the way. I reached in and around where I couldn't see with my index finger and felt the pad. I was able to pull it out and the error code went away. Moral is make sure that white plastic wiper can seat all of the way. Follow it's path with a finger and make sure your pad isn't lodged in there too.

Re: Canon PIXMA MP800 Error 6A00 by carovani (12/27/07 9:19 PM) reply + / -
unfortunately I don't think my problem will fix with the 6A00 repair routine. The printer gives me a 5100 error message which says that the "type of printhead is incorrect. Install the correct printhead". This is very strange since the printhead is exactly that supplied with the mp800 when it was purchased new. Either my (authorised) supplier is exchanging the authentic printhead for a dodgy copy or the printer analysis of the problem is faulty.
There are no paper jams. I've tried most of the moves suggested here...cleaning the printhead, depressing the purge sponges etc. I will keep trying to find the problem, but any help will be really welcome.

Thanks to all in this group for some very useful pointers. I have just posted my experience on another thread, but I thought it was worth copying here ...

I had the dreaded ambiguous 6A00 on my 2 year old MP800R.

Having Googled around, I noticed that the left most pad in the cleaning assembly had popped out. This pad is about 25mm x 8mm x 2mm and made of a stiff porous dark grey material.

I tried to pop the pad back into its housing without disassembling the printer. This was a mistake because I didn't quite get it seated correctly. The pad then went missing, and I still had the error. I then reckoned that I had nothing to lose ...

So I stripped the printer/scanner down. It's amazing how much technology is packed in such a small space. The strip down, repair and reassembly took me about two hours.

A lot of this time was spent wondering how to get the shell apart, and dithering over whether to continue. You also have to remove the whole scanner assembly before you can get to the printer.

Using a dentist-style mirror I found that the pad had got lodged in the black pump (?) unit right at the front of the cleaning assembly. But I managed to remove it and clip it firmly back in place.

I tested it before putting the case back on ... and bingo ... it worked!

Snapping the case together is a lot easier with the thin black shiny plastic bits at the front removed (they snap in easily last of all). I suspect taking the case apart would be a lot easier with these pieces removed first (at least I'll know about that next time around)!

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who posted possible solutions to this 6A00 error code! My warranty expired a month ago and I'm not too thrilled about paying to have the thing fixed. The Canon website was not helpful at all. I was ready to give up, go out and buy an HP before I stumbled on this site.

I moved the sliding piece with the wipers back and forth several times. I also pushed down on the pads. This fixed the problem -- at least for now. Considering the amount of sticky ink on my fingers, I will defintely follow the instructions on cleaning the purge station.

Again, thank you everyone!

I have an iP6600D. Same error code [6A00] came after some paper crunched through due to misalignment in the feed. The challenge was getting the printer open. Once I was able to remove the top cover, I too found a piece of paper jammed in the print head. Once removed it worked fine again.

Re: Canon PIXMA MP830 Error 6A00 by JohnLSD (1/18/08 5:47 PM) reply + / -
I am getting the dreaded MP830 6A00 error. I presume it is a stuck print head as it occurred shortly after replacing an ink cartridge (I also have checked for paper clips, bits of paper, etc. just in case).

I cannot move the print head manually. It is stuck over at the far right ... only a fraction of an inch is visible. With power off, I have tried wiggling it left/right and back-and-forth, then restarting the printer. No luck.

Several people have mentioned doing things with the white purge unit. I cannot find the purge unit. I gather that the print heads rest on it but I can't see it (unless maybe I am looking at it and not recognizing it). Is there a way to see it (or at least move it) without disassembling the printer?

Re: Canon PIXMA MP800 Error 6A00 by trigger1937 (1/18/08 8:54 PM) reply + / -
JphnLSD,.... Well John, you need to read some of these posts much closer. Turn your printer on and open the total cover as if you are going to change the ink carts. The printhead and ink carts should come to the center of your Multifunction Unit. When it is parked there, pull the power cord out of the printer. Don't turn the power off as this will return the printhead to the far right and LOCK IT IN PLACE. Now that the power is off, you can move the printhead asm to the far left and this will give you a little more room to access the purge unit. Do what the other suggestions have mentioned. Use a paper towel and press the suction pads down. Try and move the white wiper blade and see if it is stuck. Use an eye dropper and put some windex on each pad. The large pad is for the black ink and the small one is for colored ink. Cycle the power on/off a couple of time to suck the windex through the purge unit.

If none of that works, spray some windex in the area of the purge unit and turn the power on/off a couple of times.

Re: Canon PIXMA MP800 Error 6A00 by JohnLSD (1/19/08 9:02 AM) reply + / -
Hi Trigger,

Sorry for not making it more clear but the printhead holder does NOT come to the center (as it usually does when changing the ink cartridges). It is stuck to the far right, and even with tugging, jiggling, etc. it remains firming stuck over on the far right.

I suspect that somehow one or more of the printheads is caught on one of the pads of the purge unit. Only about a quarter of an inch of the printhead holder (the lever on the left-hand side of the printhead holder) is visible.

So basically the whole printhead holder seems to be stuck in its garage. Any ideas?

Thank you,

John

JohnLSD & Trigger,
I have the same problem. For my problem, there seems to be a latch or something that comes up and holds the print head in place, so it won't move either. I think what we need is some schematic or simple instruction about how to open the printer up so we can clearly see the 'garage,' and purge unit. From the look of the discussion board some people have done this, so if anyone has any ideas that would be great. I have already purchased another printer, but getting the Canon to work again would be great.

I solve these problems by purchasing a competitor brand of printer. Don't think for one minute that the problems mentioned are from a designers oversight. Desk top printers and copiers in the past have had accessible waste ink reservoirs that the user could service. The manufacturer can insult the consumer all he wants but boycotts effect the bottom line.

if it is jammed on purge unit you need to manual turn the gear that feeds paper through auto sheet feeder. you can either turn the gear on left with the encoder disk or near the purge unit itself. both will involve taking covers off

Just wanted to post what I did for those that are still having problems with their PIXMA MP830 (error 6A00).

1) I locked the scanner & turned the printer off
2) I lifted the top to expose the printer head
3) I moved the printer head all the way to the left
4) in the extreme far right along the bottom of the path where the printer head rides, there is a white plastic piece that moves front to back (instead of left to right). It is a little larger than a stamp. I moved it front to back a few times.
5) I turned the printer back on and voila! no error!

After this I had to deep clean the inkjets b/c I haven't been able to use it in quite a while. However, the main point is that there is now no error and it prints.

Good luck and thanks for this board - it truly helped me.

My MP600 is just out of warranty and has the 6A00 error. I've tried all of the advice from the above MP800 thread and there doesn't seem to be anything stuck in/around the purge unit. I've also cleaned away all dried/sticky ink.

However, when I watch the printer start up (with the print head pushed over to the left) it all goes fine until the purge unit first gets pushed forward. It immediately gets stuck under the black plastic module (with a sort of white cylindrical hinge) opposite it on the front side, at which point 6A00 is reported and everything stops. My finger can free the purge unit up, but cannot make it get stuck again manually. I can't feel anything unusual in the printer and the sponges underneath the purge unit seem to be in place and move up and down just fine. The spring on the purge unit looks alright, although it isn't powerful enough to stop the unit from getting stuck.

I've thought about taking the shell apart to get a better look but am not sure where to start. Can anyone help? Thanks

I noticed that this was the problem when:
1. The print head cartridge keeps locking itself up on the right hand side.
2. Frequent 5100 errors even when the printer is on standby
3. Even when I wipe up the print cartridge, the next print will mess up the bottom of the print cartridge with ink again.

Solved the problem by following trigger1937's outlined steps:

1. Opening the cover and wait for ink carriage to center
2. Pull out power cord
3. Pushed carriage to far left (should slide easily)
4. Used paper towel and wiped purge unit a lot of times (press down to soak paper towel with ink). Repeat until the paper towel is relatively clear.
5. Used diluted napisan (oxygen-based cleaning agent in the ratio of 1:3 with powder:water) and soaked paper towel
6. Repeat step 4 with wet paper towel. Repeat until purge unit is near-white.
7. Pulled and pushed clear plastic wiper (north of purge unit) and wiped it down
8. Slided carriage back to original position
9. Removed Print head cartridge and wiped out excess ink stuck on bottom.
10. Plugged power back on.

This worked for me.

Ok, I did all of the above and it still didn't work so I took the MP600 to a local pc repair shop who did nothing but google the problem, decide they couldn't fix it and charge me £17 for half an hour's labour.

As a last ditch effort before visiting PC World I put a narrow nozzle on the vacuum cleaner and gave it half a minute full blast on and around the purge unit.

This finally did the trick!

There must be a moral in this episode somewhere. Put your answers on a postcard.
